Description: Dendrobium is a huge genus of orchids. Dendrobium species are either epiphytic, or occasionally lithophytic. A few grow into long reed like stems. Leaf bases form sheaths that completely envelope the stem. These orchids grow quickly throughout summer, but take a rest during winter. Dormant buds erupt into shoots from the base of the pseudobulb mainly in spring, and a few species in autumn. This is then followed by rapid growth of new roots. Many Dendrobium species are known to vigorously remove toluene and xylene from the air. Some Dendrobium species are grown as medical plants.
Dendrobium is a diverse genus of orchids with different cultural needs. This culture information is for the phalenopsis-type dendrobiums pictured above. They are evergreen with thin, tall stems (pseudobulbs).
Care: Dendrobiums need lots of light, but not direct sun. A lightly shaded south window is best. East or west facing windows are satisfactory if bright (avoid direct sun except at the beginning or end of the day).
